24. 10. 2007 — Three-dimensional (3D) modelling is an increasingly requested input for GIS. It enables the analysis of spatial relationships between 3D objects and to every element of the 3D object a non-graphic attribute can be added - eg. a database with the content of roof, facade, tenants etc. 3D city models become very popular.

The headstone of the 3D city model is the model of the built-up area, which can swell to different volumes of complexity according to the intention of the customer. We can divide the building models into three groups according to the complexity of the detail and the way of modelling. Those three are: the block model (without roof modelling), urban model (with roof modelling) and detailed model (measurement of objects on roof, placing according to groundplots, greenery measurement etc.).
